Long-distance quantum communication networks would enable a range of new technologies, including modular quantum computing, secure quantum key distribution, and long-baseline quantum metrology. The foundational technologies for such a quantum internet do not yet exist, and building such networks will require discovering new quantum memories and engineering their interaction with light, as well as developing new quantum nanophotonic devices.
